Since 2015, UCLA Anderson’s Office of Alumni Relations, the UCLA Anderson Alumni Network’s New York chapter and the Loeb Foundation & Awards have collaborated to create an exclusive and intimate Q&A featuring a journalist whose work has received Loeb Award recognition.

This year’s event was held on September 27 in New York City as part of Anderson’s Worldwide Welcome Weeks (WWW). It featured Wired Magazine journalist Andy Greenberg in conversation with Bloomberg’s Vonnie Quinn about Greenberg’s Loeb Award-winning investigative feature titled “The Crypto Trap: Inside the Bitcoin Bust That Took Down the Web’s Biggest Child Abuse Site.” His story subverted our preconceptions about cryptocurrency, revealing that it is, in fact, quite traceable, and both law enforcement and bad actors have been able to capitalize on the currency’s weaknesses for their disparate purposes. Attendees asked questions during the conversation between the journalists and mingled with them before and after the event.

The WWW attendees included alumni from multiple programs at UCLA Anderson across various decades. The event was hosted by Hans Hufschmid (’85) in his Chelsea penthouse with sunset views across the Hudson River and 360-degree views of Manhattan.

The event was timed to coincide with the Gerald Loeb Awards annual full-scale show the following evening. The winners in 12 journalism competition categories, including Greenberg in the Features category, were announced during the show.

UCLA Anderson has been the steward of the Loeb Foundation & Awards since 1973. The foundation and awards were established in 1957 by the late Gerald Loeb, a founding partner of E.F. Hutton. Loeb created the awards to encourage and support reporting on business and finance that would inform and protect the private investor and the general public.

Hans Hufschmid is the CEO of Xonar Technologies, which provides security surveillance technology for live event venues such as concerts, festivals and sports arenas. He is an avid runner who has finished five marathons in cities that include Boston, Paris and New York. As a philanthropist, he has endowed the Hans Hufschmid Chair in Management at UCLA Anderson as well as fellowships at his undergraduate institution, the University of Southern California.
