Startup UCLA
Startup UCLA seeks to develop a culture of startup thinking on campus; to connect students with alumni who are successful in the startup world and with the rapidly growing Southern California startup community; to give students opportunities to learn the basics of startup thinking; and to provide a community in which students can develop and launch their early-‐stage ideas. The program’s summer accelerator provides a workspace, guidance, legal services and mentors to early-‐stage companies. The 10-‐week program exposes teams to top entrepreneurs, investors and experts in web-‐related topics. At the end of the summer, students pitch their ideas to a growing network of local entrepreneurs and investors.

The UCLA Social Enterprise Academy is a six-‐month social entrepreneurship program coordinated by Partnership UCLA in which groups of UCLA students partner with participating social ventures to develop earned income opportunities and to present their ventures to potential investors. The program is designed to link students with established not-‐for-‐profits that are looking to enhance the effectiveness of their missions. In January 2012, the Academy launched its first course, Economics 173A: Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship, in which students are introduced to the basics of business planning and then work in teams to develop a new revenue-‐generating business plan for the social enterprise to which they are assigned. Accomplished professionals serve as guest instructors to help participants learn about the basics of market research, operations, financial and business planning, marketing, SWOT analysis and pitching. The program also hosts UCLA friends and alumni as team coaches, judges and not-‐for-‐profit mentors.
