Danielle Schlegel is a decorated U.S. Navy veteran whose decade of active duty service tested her leadership and teamwork skills in a range of capacities — as a manager of people, as an operations officer and as a naval aviator. She reentered civilian employment in 2015 as a commercial airline pilot, flying Boeing 767s for Delta Air Lines.

Dani is lauded by peers for her cooperation, enthusiasm and skillful communication. She has overcome hardship the way John Wooden might have coached his players to do: “Adversity often produces an unexpected opportunity,” as Coach said. While immersed in her final year of military responsibilities and preparing to enter medical school, Dani answered the call to help a family member struggling with addiction — a protracted experience that led her to redefine her definition of success.

“Viewing life as the short stint that it is has allowed me to develop meaningful priorities, which have helped me make decisions, both big and small, in my everyday life,” says Dani. “I see every year, every week and every hour as valuable time that I need to make the most of. As John Wooden said, ‘Make each day your masterpiece.’”
