Alex Padilla becomes California's first Latino US senator |
A son of Mexican immigrants and alumnus of Anderson's Riordan MBA Fellows Program, Alex Padilla grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering degree, he did a brief stint at Hughes Aircraft before rising up the ranks of local and state politics to become California's Secretary of State. With now Vice President Kamala Harris vacating her seat in the U.S. Senate, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Padilla to take her place making him the state's first Latino U.S. Senator. For a BCG Data Scientist, Communication Skills Proved Vital |
In preparing to enter UCLA Anderson's Master of Science in Business Analytics program, Erica Millwater ('19) spent two months immersing herself in coding languages. The prep helped with her coursework but she learned that a business
foundation, particularly communication skills, was
every bit as important as the data science. Upon graduation, she joined Boston Consulting Group's digital and data science group BCG Gamma. "As a data scientist, particularly with a company that's newer to this field, you often have to present findings that go against that history.
