Anderson MBA Programs Receive STEM Certification
Anderson MBA Programs Receive STEM Certification
On June 16, UCLA Anderson announced that its full-time, fully-employed and executive MBA programs will join the Master of Financial Engineering and Master of Science in Data Analytics programs to receive STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) certification. Making it among a small number of business schools to receive the designation across its MBA programs, which is retroactive to the class of 2019, reflects the increasingly quantitative focus of the school's MBA curriculum in response to technological advances, employer needs and student interests. Amptron is Bridging the Gap with Low-Cost Ventilators
Amptron is Bridging the Gap with Low-Cost Ventilators
When Nirav Patel ('20) enrolled in UCLA Anderson's EMBA program in 2018, his dream was to produce a low-cost ventilator for hospital use. Patel found an enthusiastic audience among classmates Shannon Demus ('20), Aanchal Kumar ('20), Stephan Hwang ('20) and Vikram Saurabh ('20). They recruited another classmate, Dr. Dezireh Sevanesian ('20), a dentist who had completed a residency in clinical anesthesiology, and started planning fundraising efforts for a company called Amptron Medical. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic creating a vacuum for ventilators, Amptron is responding to the crisis by prototyping a "bridge" ventilator to provide needed care for pre-term and newborn children. Making Progress Today: What You Can Do
Making Progress Today: What You Can Do
Heather M. Caruso, Assistant Dean of equity, diversity and inclusion and Adjunct Assistant Professor, recently shared thoughts and recommendations on how to navigate the uncomfortable moments that may arise when learning about inequity, bias and discrimination. One guidepost is to use the acronym ECHO as a touchstone:
  • Engage rather than flee, dominate, or shut down the conversation.
  • Courageously address — rather than anxiously avoid — difficult topics, knowing that practice makes challenges less intimidating.
  • Humbly invite your conversation partner to correct you if you misinterpret their views, and to help you figure out if you are expressing yourself effectively.
  • Openly share, at your own pace, aspects of your identity and experience that you want to see understood, so your conversation partner can learn about you from you, rather than from what others choose to say about you.
