SCHOOL NEWS UCLA's Leadership and Guidance on COVID-19 Impact Due to the unprecedented global impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), UCLA has made the decision to transition to remote classes, postpone or cancel large events and identify remote work opportunities in order to limit community density. The campus remains open to ensure the continuity of student education and essential administrative operations, but the immediate priorities are to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. While UCLA Health's leaders are working with public health partners to advance critical efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19, Anderson faculty are also working to advance thought leadership on COVID-19 related topics, such as financial, operational and supply chain issues. ALUMNI PROFILE CEO Patty Maysent Delivers at UC San Diego Health With no interest to work on widgets and a desire to make a meaningful impact, Patty Maysent ('87, '90) pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) at UCLA after completing studies at Stanford. An accounting class piqued her interest in the levers that drive the P&L and an organization, which led her to UCLA Anderson. Currently the CEO of UC San Diego Health, she notes that the statistics education she received when getting her MBA prepared her for the increasingly data driven healthcare industry. Appointed CEO in late 2015, Patty oversees a $2 billion annual operating budget and more than 9,000 employees. ALUMNI NEWS Remembering Bernard Briskin, Supporter of Marketing Education & Research On February 29, Anderson alumnus and benefactor Bernard "Bernie" Briskin (B.S. '49) passed away. After earning his business administration degree at UCLA in 1949, Briskin subsequently went on to become owner, president and CEO of the Arden Group, which owned multiple Southern California businesses including Gelson's Markets and Mayfair Markets. Bernie's success in business was matched by his impact on the community. Together with his wife Judy, they support causes for medical research, synagogue life, women's health care, underprivileged youth and educational opportunities for the less fortunate. At UCLA Anderson, they are best known for the generous gift that resulted in the naming of the Judy and Bernard Briskin Family Plaza and their support for marketing curriculum and academic research. CONNECTIONS Access Alumni Communities and Ongoing Career Support Online Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation, many events, including Alumni Weekend scheduled for May 1-2, will not go on as originally planned. Alumni Conference & Networking Reception and Saturday Sessions are cancelled. Reunion Celebrations for the classes of 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, will be postponed to September 26, 2020. Despite these changes, Anderson continues to offer ways to connect with the school and fellow alumni online, in addition to essential resources to manage your career development.
