Alumni Spotlight | Dr. Susan Love '98 is Carving Her Own Path to Cure Cancer

An author. A professor. A surgeon. A survivor.

These are just a few of the roles that Dr. Susan Love ’98 has taken on in her lifelong pursuit to battle cancer. Today, she continues to make strides as the chief visionary officer of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and a UCLA Professor of Surgery. Previously, she founded the Faulkner Breast Center (Boston) and the Revlon UCLA Breast Center (Westwood), in addition to authoring the definitive book on breast cancer Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book.

These accomplishments, however, did not come without hurdles. Susan faced sexism as a female surgeon and wasn’t offered a job following her stint as chief surgical resident at Harvard. So, she decided to forge her own path. “I hung up a shingle, and the people that were referred to me were all women with breast problems. And I found that I could make a much bigger difference in that arena than I could fixing hernias and doing general surgery.” Now cancer free, she also happens to be a survivor of leukemia. “It taught me (about) the collateral damage, the long-term consequences of treatments — what we euphemistically in the medical profession call “side effects.” But really, they’re not side effects, they last forever.” Susan also served as a keynote speaker at the Velocity Women’s Leadership Summit earlier this month. Finding the Next Step with Anderson's Career Re-LAUNCH

The inaugural Career Re-LAUNCH program, which kicked off January 18, brought 25 UCLA Anderson alumnae back to campus on February 9 for a three-day immersive experience featuring the Velocity Women’s Leadership Summit and two days of faculty led classroom sessions.

Inspired by an observation made by Beth Friedman ’87 and Cynthi Moffatt ’88, Career Re-LAUNCH was developed by the Office of Alumni Relations, in partnership with Executive Education, to provide support to alumnae who have stepped away from the workforce to relaunch their careers. Offering participants career guidance, skill-building coursework, online resources and a sisterhood, Career Re-LAUNCH also provides alumnae a way to explore career opportunities that might also bring personal fulfillment. “I want to do something that is meaningful and also has financial rewards. But you don’t stumble into a new career path without effort. This program provides tools, support and accountability, so I actually schedule the relaunch ‘work’ into my calendar,” said participant Irene Wang ’96 who left the corporate world to raise a family.
