Alumni Spotlight | Chris Johnson '88 Leading Excellence at Nestlé |
On April 2, Dean Judy D. Olian welcomed Chris Johnson '88, Nestlé Executive Vice President, back to campus for a Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series conversation. Chris, who is celebrating his 30 year class reunion, has been overseas for the past 26 years with Nestlé . Having spent his entire career at the largest food and beverage company in the world, Chris has experienced numerous roles and changes. Currently, he is helping the company leverage its huge scale and strengths as the head of a new business excellence arm. “We’re a global company but we act really locally. One reason for our success is we’re attuned to local taste,” said Chris.
However, Nestlé is also dealing with challenges to its traditional business model. “People are looking more and more for non-processed food, looking for more organic, more artisanal foods,” he said. “In the past, these trends have been confined to the coasts, but now you’re seeing these trends globally.” Nestlé is therefore launching new products that are more organic, acquiring brands that are “born pure.“

Faculty Perspective | Eric Sussman's Take on To Rent or Buy in L.A. |
As home prices and rent levels rise in Los Angeles, Angelenos are faced with the question of whether it makes more fiscal sense to rent or buy. Eric Sussman, Adjunct Professor of Real Estate and Accounting at UCLA Anderson, warns “you’d better be thoughtful about it...it doesn’t take a lot to put a hole in your balloon.”
For example, in Los Angeles if a person chooses to purchase a median priced home around $580,000 vs. paying $2,000 in monthly rent, it would take five years and seven months to hit the break-even point. However, buying a pricier house or signing a less expensive lease can change the calculation dramatically. Tools such as the Zillow Calculator among others can offer guidance on the decision to rent or buy. Read more of Eric’s perspective on when to save and when to buy. |
