Student Perspective | Finding Social Impact through Global Immersion

Student PerspectiveOriginating in 2008, the global immersion program has enabled over 2,000 UCLA Anderson students to go to 27 countries to learn about doing business in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Students are exposed to the economy, major industries, local culture as well as key historical and political events of a country. This past fall, UCLA Anderson lecturer Gayle Northrop ’96 led a course on Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation that took her and 40 students to South Africa. As part of this four-unit elective course, they visited various organizations including Red Bull Amaphiko, a leadership training program and collaborative platform for entrepreneurs influencing social change in their communities.

“After seeing first hand the creative and successful initiatives of a spectrum of social entrepreneurs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, I came out of this program extremely encouraged about the sector and motivated to make an impact,” said Sarmad Nasir ’18. His relationship continues with South Africa even now after the program. He co-founded a student-sponsored pro bono consulting program for startup entrepreneurs in Johannesburg through the UCLA Anderson Entrepreneur Association. Read more.
