PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Subramaniam (Subbu) Ramanarayanan is an assistant professor of strategy and policy at UCLA Anderson. An economist by training, his research focuses on competition in healthcare markets and its impact on healthcare costs and quality. Recent projects include examining the extent to which rising health insurance premiums are explained by market structure and ownership in the private health insurance industry, as well as investigating the response of outpatient dialysis facilities to being rated on quality. In previous research, he has also explored agency issues in the physician-patient relationship, finding evidence that physicians who overprescribe procedures are avoided by certain lucrative patient segments and are thus disciplined by the market. His research has been cited in many mainstream media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, The Economist and the Washington Post.

Subbu received his doctorate in Managerial Economics and Strategy from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2007 and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (Calcutta) in 2001. Prior to starting graduate school at Northwestern, he worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Co. in India where he served clients in retail and health care.

Subbu is an award-winning teacher and teaches the core Business Strategy course (to the full-time as well as the Executive MBA students) at Anderson, as well as a Ph.D. course on the use of empirical research methods in strategic management. In 2010, Subbu was voted Professor of the Year by students of the graduating Full-time MBA class at Anderson.
