HFR Database (via WRDS)

Hedge fund-level detail on historical performance and assets, plus firm characteristics on the broadest and most influential hedge fund managers.

The HFR Database is currently comprised of over 6,800 hedge funds and fund of funds. It includes over 70 data fields encompassing administrative, performance, assets, instruments, and regions fund data. With performance dating to 1990, the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index is the industry's standard benchmark of hedge fund performance.

 

If you are having problems connecting to a database, please check the following:

  1. Confirm you have the proper access privileges for this database.
  2. Make sure you have the proxy server properly configured.
  3. Check if the database requires a special account.
  4. Check if the database requires a specific web browser.

Accessible via the WRDS platform and requires an authorized UCLA WRDS account. 

Individual UCLA WRDS accounts, which allow SSH access, are provided at the discretion of the UCLA WRDS Representative, and qualifications may exist. Alumni members of the community, undergraduates, research colleagues outside the university, and others not actively employed or registered with UCLA do not qualify.

Current UCLA faculty, PhDs, and Master's students may request a WRDS account, for which access is by a login ID and password. Submit an online WRDS account request and select "Register for a WRDS Account."  WRDS complete documentation is available online to account holders.

Important Note:  Master's accounts with WRDS are suspended during the summer (in 2020June 9, 2020 through Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2020), and new Master's account requests are not filled during that time.

Note: Use of WRDS is limited to academic and non-commercial research purposes. The right to access licensed databases and copyrighted material on the WRDS system is only for academic research. You may not use data downloaded from WRDS for any commercial endeavor. In addition, you may not reveal, disclose, transfer, or share username and password information with anyone. Additional restrictions apply. See WRDS Terms of Use. 

Proper citation of WRDS data:  User agrees to place the following acknowledgement in all publications or other communications prepared using the WRDS services: 
     "Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) was used in preparing __________ [identify research piece].  This service and the data available thereon constitute valuable intellectual property and trade secrets of WRDS and/ or its third-party suppliers."

Database Usage

Electronic resources, or databases, are covered by licenses limiting access to academic use by UCLA faculty, staff, and current UCLA students, with some limited to Anderson School use only. Please also read the UCLA Library policy on Appropriate Use of Licensed Electronic Resources. Violations of the University's contractual agreements with electronic resources vendors can and do result in the suspension of access to those resources for the entire UCLA community.
