The UCLA Anderson School of Management Information Systems (IS) Ph.D. program is one of the first to be established by a major business school. The program has had 56 graduates — the first in 1971, the last in 2009.
Over four decades, these grads assumed academic positions in universities and colleges around the world, as well as research and leadership positions in both industry and government. Many have made significant contributions to IS and related fields. Here we feature short news items and basic contact information for our grads. For further information on IS academics and people (including many of our IS alumni), see the Association for Information Systems (AIS).
If you are one of our alumni and have a news item or update to share, please email us. Include your current professional position and affiliation as well as your email and complete web page addresses (alumni news is updated once or twice annually).
See the UCLA Anderson Alumni Network website for further information regarding alumni activities and programs.

After working as a health insurance company medical director in the clinical informatics area for 10 years, I decided to change careers. Now I am a solo practice primary care physician in Southern California. My current role in IT is mainly as a (frustrated) user of various clinical and administrative systems.
I hope to retire in a few years. One of my post-retirement goals is to return to school and teach part time. Having seen things from both sides of the field (clinical medicine vs. health IT), I hope that my experience can offer some insights to clinicians and IT professionals on how to bridge these two fields.

Here is a brief update on what's been happening in my world:
1) I am now a full professor of management information systems at the University of Montana. I have tenure also.
2) I continue to be the Warren and Betsy Wilcox Faculty Fellow.
3) I was just awarded the MIS teaching award from our MIS students.
4) The MIS major here is very successful. We are not growing anymore, having stabilized right around where our classes are almost always full.
We place almost 50% of our students into information systems consulting firms (KPMG, where I used to work, is a major one). On average, our grads make the most money.
On a more personal note, I still love being in Montana. My kids are now 14 and 12, and are doing very well indeed.

Last December, I had a great time attending ICIS in Auckland and touring New Zealand afterwards. Here is my photo album for this trip: http://bit.ly/1Byr6zj.
At the upcoming 75th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Vancouver, Canada, on August 10, I will present a new paper in the session "Rethinking Information Systems and Digital Innovation," where Professor Burt Swanson and IS doctoral alumnus Professor Neil Ramiller will also be presenting their papers.

I have been studying services. I ran into Steve Kwan; we organized a conference in San Jose earlier this month. As soon as we learned that we were both students of Burt’s, it did not take us long to figure out what to write together. Since I came back to Kyoto, I have been studying service encounters by videotaping actual interactions between providers and customers. You can get the general idea in this TEDx talk that I gave a few weeks ago. I gave a similar talk at the Anderson Japan Chapter Speaker Series last week.
