Bernard J. Tyson to Speak at UCLA Anderson 2019 Commencement

LOS ANGELES (May 7, 2019) UCLA Anderson School of Management announced that this year’s graduating class will be addressed by Bernard J. Tyson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. and Hospitals, known as Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s leading integrated health care providers and not-for-profit health plans. The graduation ceremony will take place on Friday, June 14, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. in Wilson Plaza on the UCLA campus.

During his 34-year career at Kaiser, Tyson has successfully managed all major aspects of the organization, serving in roles from hospital administrator to division president to president and chief operating officer of the Oakland, California-based national health care organization. Tyson assumed the role of chairman in January 2014 and has served as CEO since 2013. With annual operating revenue of nearly $80 billion, Kaiser Permanente serves close to 13 million members in eight states and the District of Columbia. Tyson’s influence has been felt both nationally and internationally. TIME has listed him on its list of the most influential people in the world and named him one of the Health Care 50. In addition to being listed by Modern Healthcare as one of the most influential people in health care for five consecutive years, he’s been No. 2 on the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare list and on Fast Company’s list of most creative people. He is a board member of the American Heart Association and Salesforce. He also serves as chair of America’s Health Insurance Plans and the International Federation of Health Plans, and is a steward of the World Economic Forum’s Global Challenge on the Future of Health. “We are honored to announce Bernard Tyson as UCLA Anderson’s 2019 commencement speaker,” said Alfred E. Osborne, Jr., interim dean, professor and faculty director of the Price Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. “He is a servant leader, a visionary and a man of great character who embodies the values we embrace at Anderson.” A long-time community supporter, Tyson currently serves as chair of the Bay Area Council, a business-led public policy organization advocating for a strong economy and better quality of life for Bay Area residents, and as a member of the Business Council. A San Francisco Bay Area native, Tyson holds a Master of Business in Health Service Administration and a bachelor’s degree in health service management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He earned a leadership certificate from Harvard University.
