LOS ANGELES — The Anderson School at UCLA ranks an impressive third in the world among business schools for research and publication productivity in the areas of information systems, information technology and operations research, according to OR/MS magazine.

A study published in the December 2002 issue of OR/MS magazine examined research output by professors at business schools and universities around the world in four key Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) journals from 1990 through 2002:

  • Management Science
  • Information Systems Research
  • Operations Research
  • INFORMS Journal on Computing

Among universities, UCLA ranks 8th in research productivity in these flagship INFORMS publications, according to the OR/MS study. In this category, the study reviewed research among a variety of academic departments, including accounting, finance, math, industrial engineering, operations research, management science, information systems and information technology.

"We're very proud of our faculty's accomplishments in state of the art research," said Rakesh Sarin, Paine Professor of Management and senior associate dean and chair of the faculty at The Anderson School. "The boundless energy and creativity of our faculty makes The Anderson School a great place to work and creates an ideal environment for scholarly research."

According to OR/MS magazine, the bi-weekly publication for INFORMS members, the four publications were chosen for their representation of high quality scholarship in quantitative/technical research. These publications — with the exception of the INFORMS Journal on Computing — are used by BusinessWeek as part of their rankings of top business schools. In the BusinessWeek rankings, The Anderson School consistently fares among the top 10 in the "Intellectual Capital" category.

"The high ranking this survey confirms that our faculty is involved in high quality research that is having an impact on management science broadly defined. It is especially gratifying to note that faculty from all of our academic areas have published in these prestigious journals," said Prof. Sarin.
