Biography
Matthieu Gomez is visiting the UCLA Anderson School of Management from Columbia University. Gomez’s research interest lies in understanding the role of financial markets in the economy. He recently examined the effect of interest rates on wealth inequality. “The common wisdom is that low interest rates tend to limit wealth inequality because they decrease the growth rate of old fortunes,” he says. “However, my research shows the opposite: Low interest rates can actually increase wealth inequality because they increase the growth rate of new fortunes, like Bezos or Zuckerberg.”
