Venture Accelerator is Powering the Launch of Early Stage Startups

Created to enhance the success of early stage companies affiliated with UCLA Anderson, the Anderson Venture Accelerator offers a customized approach that is curated for each company, resulting in a high launch rate. Just during the past year, it has provided support to 50+ teams: two cohorts totaled 22 companies and 30 teams through the Business Creation Option (BCO) program. The Accelerator serves as a portfolio company feeder to accelerators offering seed stage investments, while bolstering the prospects of companies that are self-funded. On November 7, the Accelerator hosted its semi-annual showcase event featuring some of its top companies fast pitching to an audience of 200 professionals from the Los Angeles startup ecosystem. Learn more about the Accelerator and watch company presentations from its 2018 Winter Showcase.

Alumni Spotlight | BellaNové is Helping Women Slay in the Workplace

Business school students learn about finding an unaddressed problem that could be a ripe market opportunity. So when Jenny Leung ‘18 saw that her pregnant friends struggled to find inexpensive professional maternity clothes and learned that Americans throw 15 million tons of clothing away annually, she was inspired to leverage the shared economy model to launch the clothing brand BellaNové. “What we’re doing is really helping empower women because of transitions – they’re going through a lot physically, emotionally, psychologically,” Jenny said. “How do we help (women) go through it all, be confident and still kick ass at work.”

Jenny pitched the idea of BellaNové during a class at UCLA Anderson in spring 2016. Despite a series of rejections and failed attempts to place in competitions, BellaNové eventually won second place at UCLA Anderson’s Knapp Venture Competition in 2017. Teammate Matt Cox ’17, who was compelled to join the team after witnessing his pregnant wife’s struggles, says that the brand offers the opportunity to “recycle (the clothes) out every month so that you still have fresh clothes that also correlate to your changing size.” Read more.
