About the 2022 VITALS Conference
Throughout this past year, social injustices and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought issues of health inequity to light. As a result, many leaders in the health care industry are increasingly focusing their efforts to ensure people from all socioeconomic backgrounds have access to affordable health care and education. These players are seeking solutions to disparities in every facet of health care, from FemTech to large-scale diversity initiatives. At VITALS 2022, we explored what it will take to move toward a future of equitable health care. The daylong, no-cost event included keynote speakers, networking opportunities and interactive panel discussions on:

- Achieving Inclusion in Healthcare AI Systems: Is AI contributing to inequities in healthcare, or is it a potential long-term solution? Moderated by Tony Kramer, Adjunct Professor of Decisions, Operations and Technology Management, panelists included Aalpen Patel, M.D., Medical Director for Artificial Intelligence at Geisinger and Steele Institute for Health Innovation; Ogechi Nwoko, M.D., Head of Business Development at Atman Health; Chris Hemphill, Vice President of Applied Artificial Intelligence at Actium Health; and Michael Leung, Co-Founder of Spect.
- Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Research: How does health equity factor into clinical research, and what is needed for long-term success? Moderated by Aman Mahajan, M.D., Ph.D., UCLA Anderson Professor, panelists included: Siavash Sarlati, M.D., Medical Director at Anthem Digital Platforms; Gregory Forlenza, M.D., Pediatric Endocrinologist at the University of Colorado Denver; Jennifer Jones-McMeans, Ph.D., Divisional Vice President of Global Clinical Affairs at Abbott; and Albert Lai, M.D. Ph.D., Professor In Residence, Neuro-oncology Program, UCLA Department of Neurology.
- On-the-Ground Operations: What are the strategies necessary for success as companies move beyond simply setting a vision? Moderated by Paige Hosler (‘12), Division Vice President at DaVita, panelists included Kathi Cervantes, Co-Director of Community Transformation at Promesa; Jeni La, Senior Director, Value-Based Care Product Design at Envision Healthcare; Francisco Romero, Program Manager of Community Transformation at Promesa; and Myron Soyangco (‘23), Manager, Operational Excellence at Sharp HealthCare
- Bruin Tank II: During this quick pitch competition, up-and-coming innovators pitched to investors regarding the needs of healthcare today! Founders included: Ariana Gibson, Founder and CEO of STIGMA; Christian Rivera, M.D., CEO and Co-Founder at Smart Doctor; Pedro Sanchez de Lozada, Founder and CEO of Canid; and Luke Johnson (‘21), Founder at Capex and Senior Director Business Development at American Orthopedic Partners, LLC. Investors included: Alexa Binns (‘14), Partner at Halogen Ventures; Stephanie Rich, Head of Platform at Bread and Butter Ventures; Deena Shakir, Partner at Lux Capital; and Ricardo Johnson, Head of Healthworx.
- Women’s Health and Femtech: What are the key challenges femtech companies are facing in order to achieve meaningful progress in women’s health? Moderated by Jennifer McCaney, Ph.D., Executive Director of UCLA Biodesign and UCLA Anderson Lecturer, panelists included: Tracy MacNeal, CEO of Materna; Stasi Kasianchuk, Director of Health Coaching at Gennev; Sylvia Kang, Founder and CEO of Mira; and Pita Navarro, Head of Clinical Research and Operations at Evvy.
