Open Letter to Current and Prospective Students from Faculty Advisor of Section G

As a microcosm of the larger UCLA community, the UCLA Anderson community is proud of its diverse body of students, alumni, staff and faculty members.

Through the continuing efforts of our Anderson LGBT students and alumni over the last 20 years, they have established a community for our current and future LGBT students to create value to our UCLA Anderson community and beyond.  Twenty years ago, most of our LGBT students worried about rejection, and they organized their gatherings by leaving announcements in individual mailboxes after midnight.   Until a group of brave LGBT students had the courage to make a formal request to the administration, the LGBT student club was established in 1990.

Today, Section G is a proud community that is recognized to be an integral part of the Anderson community.   Not only our LGBT students are recognized by supported by our school to organize social events to interact with out student groups and our larger UCLA community, our LGBT students are actively participating in various activities organized by our LGBT alumni chapter (UCLA Anderson Gay & Lesbian Business Association (GLBA Alumni), (http://alumni.anderson.ucla.edu/chapters/chapter.aspx?id=glba) including social events (train trips, parties, and movies),  outreach activities, and networking and mentoring activities.  In 2008, the alumni group will inaugurate the "Anderson Gay and Lesbian Alumni and Friends" fellowship to recognize MBA students (regardless of sexual orientation) who demonstrated leadership for the betterment of the LGBT community.

As a faculty member, it is gratifying to see how Section G transformed itself from a collection of anonymous individuals to a recognized group of LGBT students.   I strongly encourage you to join Section G – a talented group that shines within UCLA and beyond.
