Ravi Kalakota, Managing Director - Alvarez & Marsal


Ravi Kalakota Ph.D, a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal, brings more than 20 years of experience as a global CIO, CTO and consulting leadership experience. 

Dr. Kalakota was the CIO/CTO for Mercer (Marsh McLennan).  As the Global CIO, Ravi was responsible for a $350M IT spend; 1,200 employees; 15 development centers; 800 applications; and 500 resources in three offshore locations - India, China and Singapore. He drove the IT restructuring and risk reduction initiative that took $100M in costs out over 3 years improving SLAs to the business.  As the CTO, Ravi was responsible for developing new Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, compensation BI/Analytics solutions, global SharePoint deployment, building the Private Cloud and modernization of legacy solutions.

Prior to Mercer, Ravi was the Managing Partner and Vice President of Strategy and Solutions Management for the Global Industries business unit of Unisys. He led the development and delivery of next generation solutions and professional services in Telecom (mobile solutions and triple play),  Financial Services, (Payments),  Public Sector  (National ID) and Transportation industries (Cargo and Airline Reservation Systems) .

As CEO of E-Business Strategies (EBS), a technology research and consulting practice., Dr. Kalakota consulted for numerous companies and boards on technology and product strategy.  Clients included SAP AG, Intel, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, Oracle, Medtronic,  and others.  Prior to this, Dr.  Kalakota was the  CEO of, a B2B e-commerce platform for hospitality and health care procurement. 

Dr. Kalakota was also the Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Chair Professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He also held the Xerox Chair in information systems at the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester, and taught at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Kalakota has co-authored 10 books on e-commerce, e-business, mobile, web services, and global outsourcing. His books include Frontiers of Electronic Commerce, Electronic Commerce: A Manager's Guide,  e-Business 2.0: Roadmap for Success , M-Business: The Race to Mobility , Services Blueprint: Roadmap for Execution , Offshore Outsourcing: Business Models, ROI and Best Practices , Mobilizing SAP: Business Processes, ROI and Best Practices , and Global Outsourcing: Executing an Onshore, Nearshore or Offshore Strategy .

Dr. Kalakota received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, his M.S. in computer science from the University of Hawaii, and his B.Tech in computer science from Osmania University, India.
