Victor Tabbush, Ph.D., Program Director

Dr. Victor Tabbush is Professor Emeritus at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Prior to joining the faculty at UCLA, Tabbush served on the faculty at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Tabbush is a specialist in the area of healthcare economics and health management, and the originator and faculty director of many leadership and management programs specialized for healthcare providers. Besides the MDI, this includes the Johnson & Johnson Health Care Executive Program for U.S. community-based organizations. In addition he teaches in the California Health Care Foundation Leadership Program and the Blue Shield Clinic Leadership Institute. Dr. Tabbush serves on the African Corporate Contributions Committee for Johnson & Johnson.


Nzomo Mwita, MSc, Program and Faculty Coordinator

Nzomo Mwita is currently the technical specialist (training) at AMREF headquarters. He is involved in the managing training programme of AMREF, as well as deputizing the Director for Capacity Building. He is a distinguished trainer in primary health care and community-based health care approaches and community development, project planning, monitoring and evaluation. Mwita worked with AMREFKenya as a regional training coordinator, PHC/CBHC training coordinator and project manager for Water and Sanitation. Jointly with colleagues at AMREF, Mwita made significant contributions in developing the Training of Facilitators and of Trainers courses for health and development workers in the African region. Mwita has submitted Ph.D. thesis in Public Health, to Kenyatta University, focusing on "Mechanisms for Monitoring and Evaluating Continuing Professional Development at Middle Level Health Training Institutions in Kenya".

Julius Aikins-Hawkson, MSc, FCCA

Julius Aikins-Hawkson is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the U.K. with over 18 years working experience as well as having a post graduate qualification in Advanced Information Technology. A member of the Institute of Management Consultancy in the United Kingdom, he is a problem solver with a high rate of achievement and an appetite for new challenge. Prior to joining GIMPA, he was the financial controller of Aeromedic Innovations Ltd., in the United Kingdom for eight years. At Aeromedic Innovations Ltd., he assisted in identifying and developing new business opportunities which significantly led to increased turnover. With his commercial experience and advisory skills, he has assisted clients in exploring business opportunities in developing countries.

Nana Atuobi-Yiadom

Nana Atuobi-Yiadom joins this program with over 12 years work experience in the field of Marketing and Administration. He holds a Master degree in Marketing from Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom. He is a Chartered Marketer affiliated with the Chartered Institute of Marketing UK and Ghana. Before joining the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration as lecturer in the Business School, he worked with Cheisons Telecom as the Marketing Manager. He also worked with UAC Textiles as Marketing Executive in Ghana. In addition, he handles Marketing Health Administration in the school of public administration, GIMPA. His most recent publication is in the area of in service marketing published in the Journal of Financial Services Marketing last year. He is currently working on other publications in the field of internet marketing. He has one book to his credit in the field of Marketing and is the Board chairman of Excelssior Limited in Tema.

Richard Chivaka, Ph.D.

Dr. Richard Chivaka is currently an associate professor at the Graduate Business School, University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. Chivaka holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from UCT, an MSc in Accounting & Finance from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, and a B. Com (Honours) in Accounting from the National University of Science & Technology, Zimbabwe. He teaches strategy to MBA and Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration students. He is also the Director of the Johnson & Johnson Partnership for Management Development, a leadership and management programme, that strengthens healthcare systems to support vertical transmission. He is also Faculty Director for the Cape Town MDI programme. Dr. Chivaka has been with UCT for the past 12 years, teaching on both undergraduate and post graduate programmes. Chivaka's main interests are in business strategy, strategic cost management, supply chain management, and business process improvement. He has written a number of peer-reviewed articles, a book and book chapters. In addition, he has undertaken a number of consulting projects in supply chain management, the major ones being the United Nations Industrial Development Organization Infrastructure Supplier Benchmarking Programme for South Africa, and the Ernst & Young Lumus Supply Chain Risk and Performance Toolkit Project.

Wisdom Gagakuma, MBA

Professor W.A Gagakuma is currently an Associate Professor in Public Administration at the Ethiopian Civil Service University (ECSU). His core mandate is to be part of a core team of diverse expatriate expertise to facilitate change management and its implementation in the Ethiopian Public Service through short and long term capacity building. He has been extensively involved in facilitating the development of curriculum for several programmes including Undergraduate Degree in Public Procurement, Masters Degree in Public Procurement and Asset Management, Masters in Development Management, Masters in Leadership and Good Governance, and the newly introduced Ph.D. programme in Public Administration at the Civil Service University. He was previously a Senior Lecturer/Consultant at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) at Accra, Ghana for seven years and the immediate Past President of Ghana Institute of Management, a position he held for four (4) years. Prof Gagakuma is also a consultant to the African Union Commission (AUC) and in this capacity, has completed a diagnostic study on the effectiveness of the HR functions as they are performed currently by the Human Resources Division of the Administration and the Human Resources Directorate of the Commission, and has also served as the Lead Facilitator for the second AUC-EU-UN Tripartite Seminar which was hosted by the AUC in Nairobi.


Mlenga Jere, MBA

Dr. Mlenga Jere is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business. His area of specialization is marketing. He has over two decades of work experience in higher education and in the private and public sectors. Mlenga has a Ph.D. (Business Administration) from the University of Cape Town, an MBA (Marketing) from the University of Stirling, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Zambia, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education and Training from Rhodes University.

Margaret Karangatha, MBA

Margaret Karangatha is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Institute of Management Development (AIMD) and Multiply and Divide (M&D) International. For 26 years, Margaret has built a name in Kenya and in various African countries. Margaret is a facilitator/ Consultant with AMREF where she facilitates various trainings for workers in Health Care. She was involved in the development of curriculum and training materials for Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) for Africa. She specializes in Organizational Planning, Leadership and Human Resource Management and Finance for Non Finance Managers. She is also an Associate Consultant with CORAT and Kenya Institute of Management (KIM). Margaret has a Bachelors degree in Commerce (Accounting Option) from the University of Nairobi, a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA, Strategic Management)from United States International University and is a  certified Public Accountant - Kenya.

Ronald Li-Paz

Ronald Li-Paz is a motivational speaker and lectureron issues of personal development, leadership, change management and communications. He has served international clients including Monsanto, GE, Reckitt & Colman, BMW and British Airways. He has been a management consultant with the Mac Group and Gemini Consulting (now Cap Gemini), both based in London, and serving clients throughout the world. He has made several visits to the African continent where he has visited community health centers and addressed audiences there.

Afua Kufuor, Ph.D., MSc

Afua Kufuor is currently Director of International Programs and Developement at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Ghana and a lecturer in Human Resources Management and Organisational Behaviour at the GIMPA School of Business. She possess over nine years industry related experience and significant knowledge and experience in HRM Policy related issues. Kufuor earned both her Ph.D in change management and organizational behavior and her MSc in computer applications in management systems from Cranfield University, UK. Her core areas of research and facilitation are in human resource planning and staffing, development of HR strategy, Performance Appraisal, International Human Resource Management and Social Responsibility Practices of Multinational Corporations (MNC's) in the West African sub-region.


Charles Mayaka, MBA

Charles Mayaka is an assistant professor of Strategy and Marketing at the United States International University (USIU). He is currently the director of the Centre of Excellence in Entrepreneurship Development (CEED) at USIU and the academic director of the 10,000 Women Certificate Program for Women Entrepreneurs. He was the manager of the Case Development Project (2006-2007) which was sponsored by IFC and Global Business School Network (GBSN). He worked as the faculty coordinator in the Health Management Programme jointly organized by UCLA Anderson School of Management's Management Development Institute (MDI) and African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) in 2006-2008.

Shadrick Mazaza, BSc, MB ChB, MFam Med, FCFP, PGDip Man

Dr. Shadrick Mazaza joined Faculty of UCT Graduate School of Business in 2007 as a co-convener of the Oliver Tambo Fellowship Programme, a post graduate diploma course in Health Management jointly run by the GSB and the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at UCT. He is a specialist Family Medicine Physician, and he commenced an academic career at the Graduate School of Business after many years of experience as a practicing Physician and Corporate Healthcare Executive. His main interests at the GSB are Leadership in Health and Personal Transformation. He is an Associate Integral Coach and has trained in and practiced mindfulness meditation for the past fifteen years. Dr. Mazaza obtained a medical degree at University of Manchester Medical School in England. After fully training, not qualifying, as a specialist in Internal Medicine at UCT, Dr. Mazaza went on to acquire experience in Family Medicine and primary care (public and private). He was appointed Executive Director and Medical Advisor at QUALSA Healthcare, Metropolitan Health Group in 2003. He obtained a Master's degree in Family Medicine at UCT in 2006 and was awarded a Fellowship of the College of Family Physicians of South Africa in  2008.


Phares Ochola, MSc

Phares Ochola was, until February 2008, a lecturer of Management Science/Operations Research at Kenyatta University Business School, when he took a leave of absence to Manage the African Capacity Building Foundation funded financial sector capacity building project in Kenya and the wider Eastern & Southern Africa Anglophone region. While at Keyatta University he was the founding chairman of the Department of Management Science. He served in various capacities including; chairman of the Department of Business Administration, coordinator of the Institute of Business, later the School of Business, and coordinator of the MBA program. A specialist in management science/operations research, Ochola is at the final stage of his doctoral program in the area of adoption of e-commerce among the SMEs in Kenya. He has been the Operations Management Specialist since its inception. Ochola was also instrumental in the design and development of AMREF's Practical Project Management where he also doubles as a key training consultant. 


Alfred E. Osborne, Ph.D.

Alfred E. Osborne, Jr. is senior associate dean at UCLA Anderson School of Management. Osborne is also the founder and faculty director of the Harold and Pauline Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and an associate professor of business economics at UCLA Anderson. The Price Center serves to organize all faculty research and student activities and curricula related to the study of entrepreneurship and new business development at UCLA Anderson. He also serves as faculty director of the UCLA/Johnson & Johnson Head Start Management Fellows Program conducted at UCLA and has led the development of several management training programs in the early childhood education field. 


Dr. Bill Martin Osumba, MPH

Dr. Bill Martin Osumba is a public health specialist. He holds a Master degree in Public Health from Royal Tropical Institute, Netherlands. He previously was the focal person for the Ministry of Medical Services in the Division of Health Information System. He has been involved in the HIS strengthening initiatives and implementation of the HIS strategic plan. Currently he is a member of the Kenya Health Sector SWAp Secretariat in-charge of Health Sector Monitoring and Evaluation. He is involved in the Fellowship program at the University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical Diseases as a supervisor of fellows in the Health Informatics track.

David Wangombe, MBA

David Wangombe has lectured accounting and finance courses both at the university and tertiary level for over 10 years. He has a BA (Hons) and MBA from the University of Nairobi, and a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA (K). Currently he is the dean of Faculty of Commerce, Strathmore University. Previously he lectured at the Kenya College of Accountancy and the Africa Nazarene University. He has authored several books used at both university and professional accounting studies. His recent work is the textbook, Advanced Accounting, Theory and Practice. Wangombe has written several cases for teaching business executives and has also been involved in consultancy training for informal sector businesses and also finance for non-finance managers.

Gamel Wiredu, Ph.D., MSc

Dr. Gamel Wiredu is a senior lecturer at the School of Technology, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He holds MSc and Ph.D. degrees in information systems from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK. His current research interests are in the relationship between handheld information technologies and geographically distributed activities.

His previous research has been published in international journals such as, European Journal of Information System, Information and Organization, Cognition, Technology and Work, and Journal of Education and Works.

S. Michele Youngleson, MBChB BSc Hons (Epidemiol)

Dr. Michele Youngleson works in South Africa as and independent consultant in healthcare systems improvement and Improvement Advisor for the US-based NPO, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) since 2005. Using large scale improvement methodologies to strengthen public healthcare systems and programs, she has extensive experience in HIV/AIDS/TB, PMTCT, and hospital-based Patient Safety programs. Her areas of interest are the use of data to drive improvement, systems redesign, and the large-scale spread of successful changes. She has a medical degree from the University of Cape Town and an honors degree, cum laude, in Epidemiology, from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She has published a number of peer reviewed articles, a book on best practices in HIV/AIDS care, and is currently writing a chapter on Data for Quality Improvement for nurse managers.
