At the beginning of the program year, Riordan Scholars are divided into Stock Market Analyst Competition teams. Over the course of eight months, each team researches a publicly traded Fortune 500 company according to their assigned industries. With guidance and instruction from UCLA Anderson alumni, each team works together to create a detailed presentation, which includes a company overview, a review of the company's financial performance, and a buy or sell recommendation. The project introduces students to the excitement and intellectual task of understanding the financial markets culminating with the annual Stock Market Analyst Competition where teams present and compete by industry.
"The Stock Market Competition has helped me grow as a person and an intellectual individual. I learned how to analyze stock and act as a stock analyst for the company that we were assigned. Without the program I would have never been able to understand the stock market or learn certain terminology that pertains to the subject. Now, I have learned the gist of what the stock market is; I'm able to present to a room full of people and have improved my public speaking skills. Having to work in a group also allowed me to form a bond with my team members and to learn to trust them. We all learned to work together collaboratively as a unit. The greatest thing, I took away from the competition was the importance of teamwork."
