The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation works to “uncover, connect, pioneer and advance social innovators and entrepreneurs who share our passion for generating inclusive opportunities and achieving social justice in Africa.” Part of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town, the Bertha Centre is engaging a UCLA Anderson Applied Management Research team to explore a scaling strategy and business plan to take the center’s Healthcare Innovation Lab across the African continent. This independently operating lab was launched as a prototype to unite stakeholders (government, academia, social enterprise and NGOs) across various areas around key challenges. The Bertha Centre will rely on the AMR team to establish how the initiative fits into the ecosystem of innovation labs on the African continent and propose a business model and value proposition to determine which components of the innovation lab are scalable, adaptable and transferrable.
