Director Steve McQueen Kicks Off UCLA Anderson New Speaker Series in Partnership with ICON MANN

Oscar-nominated director uses his landmark film “12 Years a Slave” to educate a new generation on an important piece of American History

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 25, 2014) - Steve McQueen, award-winning director, producer, screenwriter and video artist, is the featured speaker at the launch of UCLA Anderson School of Management's new speaker series -- Entertainment that Matters on Feb. 28, 2014The purpose of the program, developed by UCLA Anderson's Center for Management of Enterprise in Media, Entertainment & Sports (MEMES), is to encourage dialogue that can help raise awareness of, educate and influence social change through the power of media, storytelling and celebrity.

"The critical and commercial success of McQueen's Oscar-nominated movie, '12 Years a Slave,' clearly demonstrates the power of storytelling to educate a new generation about an important period in America that is currently omitted from most school curriculum," says Sanjay Sood, UCLA Anderson professor of marketing and MEMES faculty director.   

McQueen has been working on an initiative to make "12 Years a Slave" required reading in public high schools.  His efforts have been realized with the recent approval of the National Schools Boards Association (NSBA) initiative to make the book, film and study guide available to schools nationwide. 

In January, McQueen was asked and graciously accepted the honor to be one of ICON MANN's 28 MEN OF CHANGE. The mission of the organization is to positively change the global dialogue surrounding the Diaspora of Black Men.  

"Throughout the promotion of '12 Years a Slave,' Steve's success matrix was clear -- that when Solomon Northup's story is required reading in U.S. schools, he would be pleased," says Tamara N. Houston, ICON MANN founder and partner. "The network of ICON MANN could not agree more, and we are pleased to be in partnership with UCLA Anderson, supporting this 'Entertainment That Matters' event." 

Darnell Hunt, professor of sociology and director of UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, will conduct the interview with McQueen, followed by a discussion with education influencers.
