UCLA Anderson Entertainment and Media Executive Program to Examine Emerging Markets in Digital Media

Four-day program provides training for entertainment and media professionals


LOS ANGELES - To equip executives with the knowledge and skills to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving world of media and entertainment, UCLA Anderson School of Management will present the second annual Entertainment and Media Executive Program June 17-20, 2008. The four-day intensive program, led by world-renowned UCLA faculty and key industry leaders, will focus on the challenges and opportunities that emerge from an ever-accelerating shift of production, distribution and consumption of media and entertainment into the digital realm.

“New digital platforms are driving a fundamental paradigm shift in the ways entertainment and media organizations do business,” says Kelly Bean, assistant dean of executive education at UCLA Anderson School of Management. “This program provides managers and executives with innovative, research-backed executive education, demonstrating UCLA Anderson’s commitment and relevance to an industry of great local and global significance.”

Reaching across platforms of film, television, Internet, music and gaming, the program will hone in on several key areas of digital entertainment, including new media marketing, digital content delivery, and deal-making for future digital platforms. Participants will benefit from a variety of exciting sessions ranging from how to combat piracy to changing ad-driven media to exploring gaming options overseas. Program participants will gain access to a valuable network of major industry players, creating opportunities to forge new relationships and build cross-sector synergy.

Faculty Director and prominent media futurist Gigi Johnson is confident that the benefits derived from last year’s program will also be enjoyed by this year’s participants. “What we saw in the inaugural program was a wide range of executives taking apart their own companies and rethinking strategies based on what they had learned,” says Johnson. “These were senior executives who found themselves able to talk openly about their own challenges in times of significant disruption.”

Kicking off the program is an opening night panel and reception to debut breakthrough research on emerging television opportunities in the BRIC markets, which include Brazil, Russia, India and China. Presented in collaboration by the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel (AMEC), UCLA Anderson, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Reed Media and Content Agenda, both the panel and reception are open to the public.

Other sessions will be led by some of UCLA’s top faculty, among them the program’s faculty director and UCLA Anderson lecturer Gigi Johnson; UCLA Anderson marketing professor Sanjay Sood; UCLA Law School’s intellectual property professor Doug Lichtman; UCLA Anderson lecturer and former co-head of McKinsey & Company’s West Coast Media & Entertainment Derek Alderton; and UCLA Anderson information systems professor George Geis, author of Media Deals.

The Entertainment and Media Executive Program was created to address the changing landscape of the entertainment and media industry. Nearly every week, a business model shifts or a new product is launched, making it crucial for existing media companies and executives to understand the dynamics and fluctuations in each market. The program aims to train executives to develop a keen awareness of emerging markets and respond with the strategic visioning skills necessary to thrive in their respective fields.
