Susan Wojcicki '98 Driving Change in Technology and Gender Equality
Susan Wojcicki ’98

“Important changes are often revolutionary, not evolutionary.”

In front of a packed house on February 11, Susan Wojcicki ’98 walked through her journey from UCLA Anderson MBA to landlord (to then little known entrepreneurs Sergey Brin and Larry Page) to Google employee #16 to her current role as CEO of YouTube. As the featured speaker of the Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series, Wojcicki shared wisdom she has collected on her road to becoming one of America’s most powerful women. “Have insights about the future and carefully watch for the clues that the world is changing,” said Wojcicki. She also addressed gender equality in the tech space—an issue she is extremely passionate about. “This is an issue for society. We need to look at the overall technical influences and offer computer science at the middle school level.” Read more...

Monique Jones '93's Path from Omaha to Hollywood's Film Industry

“ If I ever win an Oscar, Gretchen [Humbert] ’89 is the first person I’ll thank for my big break in entertainment!

Meet Monique Jones ‘93, vice president of finance and controller for leading independent finance and production company Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and chair of the affinity groups of UCLA Anderson Alumni Network‘s executive committee. An interest in the entertainment industry led Jones to pursue her MBA at UCLA Anderson—where she leveraged the opportunity to explore the industry through a summer internship in strategic planning at EMI Music and a field study project evaluating business opportunities in the R&B/urban music market for Capitol Records. Despite her passion for the music industry, she discovered more post-graduation opportunities for MBAs in the film and television industry, which is where she has thrived since. Jones was hired for her first job in film at PolyGram Filmed Entertainment by fellow alumna Gretchen Humbert ’89, who was then a vice president in the strategic planning department—and now the CFO at the Natural History Museum of LA. When asked about dismaying statistics in the Hollywood Diversity Report about the dearth of women and people of color in prime roles, Jones said “There’s no easy solution, but I believe the increased distribution opportunities outside of the traditional studio model—OTTs like Netflix and Hulu—will open up not only creative opportunities but also business opportunities for women and people of color.” Read more...
