Collaboration Accelerates Entrepreneurial Success

AcceleratorBorn from the need to equip UCLA students with the resources to compete in an increasingly entrepreneurial business climate, the UCLA Anderson Venture Accelerator was launched this past January via a partnership between UCLA Anderson and UCLA Library. On August 2, an event jointly hosted by the partners featured remarks from UCLA students—past and present—to discuss what it takes to be competitive and how passion has driven the success of recent UCLA Anderson entrepreneurs.

The evening included remarks from EMBA alumnus Derek Herrera '15 of Spinal Singularity and introductions of several student entrepreneurs. The evening also celebrated a gift made by UCLA Anderson Board of Visitors member Jim Freedman '78. At the end of a recent Ojai Valley Century Bike Ride with Dean Judy Olian, Freedman was persuaded to claim a naming opportunity for the Accelerator. In her acknowledgment of the generosity of the Accelerator's supporters, Olian said "Jim's generosity doesn't end with what his gift enables here...it extends to the advice he gives student entrepreneurs as an alumnus. That engagement is as priceless as anything." Read more.

In a recent UCLA Anderson Blog post, Professor Tang recapped the reasons Uber didn't have a chance in China. He cited Uber's origins as a U.S. based company, desire to displace rather than cooperate, and a lack of deep understanding of Chinese consumer needs among some of the reasons. Read more.
