UCLA Anderson Born Partnership Launches Health Tech Company BodySpec

As part of his training regimen for the Air Force Academy's football team, Bryce Luken '14 underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry technology (DXA) scans to measure bone density, analyze body compositions, and identify the amount and location of fat and lean tissue. During his first year as an Anderson student, Luken found access to a DXA scan to be limited in Los Angeles. Recognizing a market opportunity existed to bring the technology to Los Angeles gym trainers, fitness buffs as well as to broader masses, he formed a partnership with fellow classmate Elaine Shi '14 to build upon his business idea through Anderson's Entrepreneurship & Venture Initiation course and Business Creation Option project. With invaluable guidance from Professors Jeff Scheinrock and John Funk, plus support from the Anderson alumni network, the company has grown steadily, even opening a storefront location in West L.A. "We're also now doing scans at Google, Facebook and LinkedIn, getting into the corporate space through Anderson connections and classmates" said Luken.

Incubator Event Unites UCLA Business, Engineering and Law Alumni for Networking, Collaboration and Innovation

On Thursday, August 27, the Evening at the Hammer - Network, Collaborate, Innovate event brought together 150 + alumni from UCLA Anderson, UCLA Engineering and UCLA Law at the Hammer Museum courtyard in Westwood, CA. The mission of the evening was to provide a forum to foster collaboration among UCLA professional school alumni - who have a broad set of expertise - to launch the next big startup. Alumni were engaged in dynamic discussions ranging from testing labs to marketing strategies to patent searches. "It was just a vibrant, collaborative event...it clearly demonstrates what can happen when you put some really smart Bruin minds in a room together" said UCLA Anderson Los Angeles alumni chapter president Jonathan Schreter '00. In attendance were also a handful of double Bruins who are alumni of both UCLA Anderson and UCLA Engineering. Start jotting down your ideas - future incubator event dates to be announced soon!
