Founding Members Celebrate National Organization’s 25 Year Anniversary

Circa 1988

2013

When Anderson alumni Maggie Peña ('85), Richard Rey ('86),
Chris Arranaga ('85)
and Henry Hernandez ('85) helped found the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) in 1988, they didn’t expect it to last. "I was literally running the organization out of my bedroom," Peña says. "People would call my house and think we had a full staff. Nobody knew. It was a great marketing ploy."

NSHMBA’s mission is to build and advance Hispanic leadership “through graduate management education and professional development.” And, 25 years later, the group has more than 25,000 members with chapters across the country and sponsors two scholarships. It also has partnerships with more than 70 colleges and universities in the United States to support qualified Hispanic students in earning their MBA degree. Learn more about NSHMBA here.

Top Ranking from Inc 5000 for Anderson Alumnus

The idea that an economic downturn is a good time to start a company has certainly worked out for Jason Owen (’10 FEMBA). Amped Wireless, the company he conceived while still at UCLA Anderson, landed the No. 16 spot on the 2013 Inc. 5000 list. The company was also No. 1 in the computer hardware category and No. 4 in the top California-based companies.

“The business plan was created in Business Plan Development class with [Prof.] Scheinrock,” Owen says. “I was actually forced to start the company, because I was let go at my existing job and I had just graduated as a FEMBA, purchased a home and got engaged. If you remember, the economy was in pretty bad shape and finding a job would be difficult.”
