Lifelong Connections: UCLA Anderson and the Chance to Study with a UCLA Nobel Prize winner

Dr. Manel Baucells (Ph.D. ’99) has made the most of the connections he cultivated while at UCLA Anderson, pursuing his Ph.D. in Management. In the last year of completing his Ph.D., Baucells discovered the growing field of behavioral economics, and forged a lifelong relationship with Professor Rakesh Sarin, with whom he co-authored a self-help book: Engineering Happiness: A New Approach for Building a Joyful Life.

As part of his dissertation Baucells worked with Professor Steven Lippman on problems of negotiations, and with Professor Emeritus Lloyd Shapley, on game theory. “Steven Lippman was a great advisor. He encouraged me to have a strong mathematical and economics background, and so I did. Time has proved he was right. I didn’t know anything about game theory, so I took every class that was offered, beginning with Shapley’s undergraduate course. It was very exciting to work with Professor Shapley. He was a great name in game theory,” says Baucells. And, back in 1994 Baucells and colleagues speculated as to whether Professor Shapley would ever win the Nobel prize. “When hope was almost lost, justice was finally done." Read about Professor Shapley’s Nobel prize.

Working Vacation for UCLA Anderson Student

Helen Belogolova (Ph.D. ’15), a former trader at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., currently pursuing a Ph.D. at UCLA Anderson, was recently featured in Bloomberg Businessweek. “I'm working on a Ph.D. in Marketing with a focus on consumer behavior and in order to do that well you really need to understand behavior. I realized we all get so hammered down in details, answering e-mails, doing small task after small task, we lose the ability to take that step back.”  So Helen travelled to Italy to work on a vineyard in Tuscany for two weeks.  She returned ready to tackle interesting and difficult research questions on how saving for something specific can increase the value of that item.

From Early Childhood to the Global Marketplace

The economic impact of early childhood education (ages 0 to 5) on the workforce was discussed during a one-day conference at UCLA Anderson. It turns out those years before children arrive at a kindergarten make a big difference. “California is adding jobs rapidly if not more rapidly than any other place in the United States," said Jerry Nikelsburg of the UCLA Anderson Forecast. "But unemployment remains high because the people displaced are from jobs that are not coming back."
