Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo, received the 2012 John Wooden Global Leadership Award at a dinner on Monday, November 5 at the Beverly Wilshire.
At the dinner, Nooyi discussed the importance of investing in employees. She said the cost of losing a key manager or executive is much higher than taking a few extra steps to retain them. As a woman CEO raised with Indian cultures and customs, Nooyi said she seeks a more personal connection to her top staff - and it pays dividends. For instance, she has written letters to the parents of her direct reports thanking them for raising such a great child. "This creates a whole new level of engagement, and unleashes a level of commitment you never imagined," Nooyi said.
Nooyi "wished she could have played for" coach Wooden and said she grew up with the "spirit" of John Wooden around her in the form of her grandfather, who encouraged her to do great things, her parents, who said women have the same right to succeed as men, and many mentors.
Indra Nooyi leads the largest food and beverage business in North America and the second-largest in the world. Nooyi is growing and strengthening PepsiCo's iconic brands around the world--including Pepsi-Cola, Quaker Oats, Tropicana, Gatorade and Lay's -- while guiding the company's commitment to sustainable growth, called "Performance with Purpose."
