Martin Z. Braun

Martin Z. Braun covers public finance and the municipal bond market for Bloomberg News in New York City. A Cornell University graduate, Braun spent four years as a speechwriter and special assistant to Rochester, New York mayor William A. Johnson. Jr. before beginning his career in journalism. He has worked as reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Bond Buyer. Braun’s reporting about New Jersey-based Commerce Bancorp’s possible violations of municipal securities rules that ban the use of political donations to win municipal bond business prompted an investigation by the NASD last year. On Dec. 8, the bank agreed to pay $600,000 to settle the probe without admitting or denying the alleged violations. He also won the Society of Business Writers and Editors award for enterprise and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants award, both in 2006, for showing how Wall Street overcharges taxpayers in bond deals. Braun and his wife have two daughters and live in Queens, New York.
