Jeff Plungis

Jeff Plungis has been a Washington correspondent with The Detroit News focusing on the auto industry since November 2000.  In 2003, he received the Washington Correspondence Award from the National Press Club, the Golden Wheel Award from the Detroit Press Foundation and the Golden Quill Award from the Washington Automotive Press Association.

Plungis previously covered transportation issues with Congressional Quarterly in Washington in 1999 and 2000. He was assistant managing editor for CQ’s daily publication, the CQ Daily Monitor, from September 1995 through March 1999. Plungis was also editor of Empire State Report, covering New York state politics and public policy in Albany.

Plungis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his B.A. in English from the Ohio State University, and his M.A. in Journalism from New York University. He was a Rotary International Peace Scholar from 1989-1990 at the University of Hong Kong.

Plungis is married to Bethany Karn. They live in Takoma Park, Md., with their three children: Mick, 10, Sonja, 8, and Alexander, 6.
