Janet Patton is a native of Van Buren, Ark. She attended the University of Arkansas before graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1987 with a journalism degree. Ms. Patton worked as a copy editor and wire editor for about a decade before becoming a reporter. She has been writing about agriculture for about five years; focusing primarily on the equine industry. Ms. Patton has been at the Lexington Herald-Leader almost 10 years. This will be her fourth Kentucky Derby. Earlier this year, she won an Eclipse Award for "The Answer Was Chewing On The Leaves," as part of her coverage of the 2001 foal-deaths crisis.
