David Ottaway grew up in upstate New York. He received his BA from Harvard College and Ph.D. from Columbia University. After working for UPI in Paris and Algiers, he joined The Washington Post’s foreign desk in 1971. Since that time, he has served as a foreign correspondent in Africa, the Middle East and Europe and a national security reporter in Washington. In 1994, he joined The Post’s Investigative Unit.
