Before Chiaki Kawajiri joined The (Baltimore) Sun as a staff photojournalist in 1995, she worked at The Oregonian newspaper and The Los Angeles Times. Her work has also appeared in Life magazine, Newsweek, U.S News and World, and several international photography books. Chiaki has covered stories worldwide, including the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan, which killed over 5,000 people, infant mortality in Nepal, and village life in Thailand. She brings a strong sense of empathy and humanity to her work. She has won awards from numerous organizations including the Asian-American Journalist Association - where she was a two time Photographer of the Year, the National Press Photographers Association and the White House News Photographers Association.
