Entries may be submitted under any of the following categories. Please note, for the 2013 competition some category definitions may have changed.
PLATFORM NEUTRAL CATEGORIES
Platform neutral categories welcome and encourage journalism in all its forms and in any combination of forms - broadcast (video and audio), digital, print, still photography, graphics/data visualization, and social media. Each submission is limited to a maximum of five (5) elements, including individual article(s), broadcast segments (television, radio, or online video), online elements, visual elements, blogs, photos, etc.

Beat Reporting: Exemplary coverage of a business, financial or economic beat. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
Breaking News: Exemplary coverage of a competitive business, financial or economic news story within seven days of an event, with special attention paid to the first 24 hours. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
Commentary: Including business, financial or economic editorials, columns, syndicated columns, blogs, on-air or video commentary or analysis. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
Explanatory: Exemplary in-depth analysis and clear presentation of a complex business, financial or economic subject. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission
Images/Visuals: This category recognizes the exemplary use of images - still photography, video, charts, graphics, illustrations - to explain, enlighten or educate the reader/viewer/user about contemporary business, financial or economic topics. The images and accompanying text, voice track or sound, can appear in any media. Judges aim to recognize imagery - still or moving, illustration or photo-based - that is highly creative, imaginative and impactful in helping to tell a significant business, financial or economic story. International: Covering international business, financial or economic stories. Must be English language and published in the US. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
Investigative: For a business, financial or economic story or group of up to five (5) stories in any medium or in a combination of media. Factors the judges will consider include originality, creativity and persistence in gleaning information, storytelling power and impact. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
Personal Finance: Excellence in business, financial or economic journalism that informs and protects the individual investor and consumer. Eligible entrants include journalists and also experts who are determined not to have conflicts of interest or personal agendas related to the submitted material. Original research and reporting are considered very important in choosing the winner. Print, online and broadcast are eligible. (Maximum 5 elements per submission)
PLATFORM SPECIFIC CATEGORIES
Platform specific categories must consist of a single platform of journalism as designated by the category. Each submission is limited to a maximum of five (5) elements of a single platform. Elements include individual article(s), broadcast segments (television, radio or online video), online elements, etc.

Broadcast: Outstanding in-depth reporting and presentation of a business, financial or economic story. Television, radio and online video are eligible. (Submissions may consist of one full length program OR one package of up to five (5) segments. A package should consist of up to five (5) segments of the same platform.)
Magazines: Excellence in magazine business, financial or economic reporting and writing. Articles published in magazine supplements to newspapers may be entered in this category. (Maximum 5 articles per submission)
News Services: Seeks excellence in business, financial or economic reporting and writing of content created originally for news service distribution. (Maximum 5 articles per submission)
Newspapers - Large: Circulation of 200,000 or more. (Maximum 5 articles per submission)
Newspapers - Small & Medium: Circulation of 199,999 or less. (Maximum 5 articles per submission)
Online: Outstanding use of digital mediums with content that is exclusive to the internet, including interactive elements. (Maximum 5 digital elements per submission)
CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Lifetime Achievement Award*: honors journalists for exceptional career contributions in the field of business, financial and economic news.
Lawrence Minard EditorAward*: recognizes excellence in editing by a business editor whose work does not receive a byline or whose face does not appear on the air for the work covered.
