The PhD is a 5-year program. During the first 4 years, students are given fellowships to cover all tuition and fees, including non-resident student tuition (NRST). Domestic students are expected to establish California residency in their first year; NRST will only be provided to domestic students in their first year. In the 5th year, student fees are covered by TA appointments, which provide fee remissions and a salary.

Continued financial support is contingent on maintaining good academic progress, and meeting doctoral milestones (completing first year summer paper, completing second year comprehensive exam, and advancing to candidacy after the third year).
