Significant Others

On behalf of the Joint Ventures Club, congratulations to you both! Having recently gone through the admissions process ourselves, we know that even though only one of you may be going to school in the fall, the decision to apply was made together. Without each other's support, you could not have reached this point. As a team, you both have earned this admission and we applaud you!

The two of you are about to begin a two-year journey that will offer an amazing array of new opportunities. It might involve moving to a new city or even to a new country, finding a new job, or making new friends. The Joint Ventures club is here to support both of you as you begin this journey, and to help make your transition to Los Angeles and UCLA Anderson an easy and unforgettable experience.

To help you get started, we've created this section to provide information and resources that you might find valuable when you come to Los Angeles. We also hope you'll visit the Joint Ventures Website, where you can find information about joining our listserv, a schedule of upcoming club events, and other useful information about life at UCLA Anderson.

To learn even more, we encourage you to speak with both current and former students and Sig-O's about their experiences here. You will find that most have found a supportive community, a group of new friends, and a diversity of great opportunities. If you'd like, feel free to start with us. Our email addresses are below so feel free to contact us with questions.

Congratulations again on this significant achievement, and welcome to the UCLA Anderson family! We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming Joint Ventures event.

Sincerely,

Matt Stewart

Resources for Significant Others

Joint Ventures Club
The UCLA Anderson Joint Ventures club aims to encourage the integration of spouses, partners, fiancées, and significant others into the UCLA Anderson Community. The club organizes social events to allow significant others to become acquainted with one another, find friends with similar interests, and become a support network during your time in Los Angeles. Past events have included wine tasting, museum trips, BBQs, and hikes in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains.

AnderKids
AnderKids is a sub-club of Joint Ventures especially for student families with children of all ages. We organize fun events and attend such Anderson activities as the ski trip, C4C weekend and Rose Bowl football games."

UCLA Anderson and Campus-Wide Activities
Significant others are welcome at most UCLA Anderson clubs and events. Many spouses and significant others join social events, Alumni Weekend, special speaker events, and Challenge for Charity volunteer events. Besides Joint Ventures, some clubs have leadership roles within their organization created solely for significant others.

In addition to UCLA Anderson activities, spouses and dependents of our students can enjoy other activities offered through UCLA. For example, the UCLA Film and Television Archive offers its vast holdings through a wide range of programs dedicated to the preservation, education and exhibition of the moving image. In addition, the UCLA Central Ticket Office sells student tickets to UCLA sporting events, performances by the UCLA Departments of Music and Theater, and other performing arts venues.

Volunteering
Volunteer opportunities in the city of Los Angeles include helping out at local libraries, museums and schools as well as working with the elderly, the homeless, and animals. Using LA Works is one of the easiest ways to find other volunteer opportunities in Los Angeles. Please visit their Website at: http://laworks.com.

Entertainment
Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world. You and your student partner will find a wide variety of activities to enjoy in the Los Angeles area. As well as selling tickets to UCLA events, the UCLA Central Ticket Office offers discounts on tickets to attractions such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, and the San Diego Zoo (see Student Life section for more details).

Continuing Education
While your significant other is pursuing an MBA, why not consider taking a class or obtaining a degree yourself? Los Angeles is home to a number of institutions offering a wide spectrum of classes. The following list highlights a few options. UCLA Extension, in particular, offers 4,650 courses and certificate programs per year in such fields as music, business, architecture, and human resources.

Sports & Recreation
UCLA Recreation administers the coordination of programming, facilities, equipment and supervision of campus recreational activities and services.

The major UCLA recreational facility is the John Wooden Center, a comprehensive student activities building with multiple gymnasiums, racquetball/handball courts, a rock wall, squash courts, a weight training facility, exercise/dance and martial arts classes, and a games lounge.

UCLA Youth Programs
UCLA Recreation also organizes a variety of summer day camps, recreation classes, enrichment programs and year-round weekend activities for children of the UCLA community ages 18 months through 17 years. The Youth Programs Division offers students a number of summer employment opportunities and a chance to work with children in a learning environment.

Schools
For a list of local schools (public and private), please visit the California Department of Education's Website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/sd/. You also may visit the Los Angeles Unified School District's Website at: http://lausd.net for information on public schools in the area. Current Joint Ventures members also may be a good resource on specifics so feel free to contact the club to be referred to another member with children.

Childcare
UCLA Early Care and Education (ECE) may be the best resource to utilize. The organization offers care for children two months to six years of age at three centers:

  • Fernald Child Care Center located near the UCLA Anderson complex;
  • Krieger (Bellagio) Center located in the northwest corner of the UCLA campus; and
  • University Village Child Care Center & Kindergarten located in the University Village student housing complex.
This service is only eligible for UCLA full-time students and UCLA paid staff and faculty. The center, through its Child Care Resources Program, also provides information on Westside child care providers and a small number of caregivers who will come to your home. In addition, the program will advise on how to evaluate a particular program or provider and what questions will provide parents with the information they need.
