"The Housing Recovery: How Long? How Strong?"

UCLA Anderson Forecast in partnership with the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate will present a strategic economic and demographic overview of Southern California's residential housing market. The program will also include an update on the Allen Matkins/UCLA Anderson Commercial Real Estate Survey. Housing starts have roughly bottomed off their Great Recession lows, but remain at historically low levels. With prices rising and an absence of listings, bidding wars are breaking out in select markets. What is the potential strength and length of the housing recovery in terms of activity and prices? Thomas Safran is a personal investor, entrepreneur, avid philanthropist and real estate developer serving as Chairman of Thomas Safran & Associates. His firm specializes in both family and senior mulit-family housing and mixed use developments with a particular emphasis on affordable housing. He most recently, in a partnership with the Los Angeles Housing Authority and Housing Department, built Del Rey Square, a four-story community with 124 top quality apartments for seniors with the goal of transitioning formerly homeless residents. Mr. Safran has been active locally in many Los Angeles nonprofit housing organizations. He served as President of Alternative Living for the Aging and Vice President of Menorah Housing Foundation. Mr. Safran earned an MBA from UCLA where he supports both the Ziman Center as a Founding Board Member and the Williams Institute of the Law School and is a Chancellor's Associate.

Teaching sound business practices, which includes business ethics and leadership, is at the foundation of UCLA's curriculum. These values are shared by our faculty and reinforced in their teaching across all disciplines. The Howard J. Levine Distinguished Lecture on Business Ethics is a lecture series presented annually by the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate.  The series brings the most distinguished scholars and business practitioners to UCLA for lectures that enlighten and engage students on the concepts of business ethics and how to apply them in real-world settings. The series is made possible by a generous gift from Howard and Irene Levine. Mr. Levine is a member of the Founding Board of the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate.

UCLA Anderson Finance Brown Bag Seminar - Chandler Lutz, Copenhagen Business School

Chandler Lutz is an assistant Professor at the Copenhagen Business School in Copenhagen, Denmark; and a UCLA Ziman Center 2012/2013 Visiting Scholar. He combines theory, econometrics, and empirical techniques to study behavioral finance and macroeconomics. His research interests also include Bayesian econometrics and time series forecasting. Prof. Lutz will present his paper, "Fear and Loathing in the Housing Market: Evidence from Search Query Data," co-written by Stuart Gabriel, Arden Realty Chair, Professor of Finance, and Director, Richard S. Ziman Center for Real Estate at University of California, Los Angeles; and Marcelle Chauvet, University of California, Riverside.

Real Estate Law Association (RELA) Lunchtime Panel: "The Fate of Redevelopment and Affordable Housing"

Lunch will be provided.  Please join the UCLA Ziman Center's Real Estate Law Association (RELA) for a lunchtime panel discussion regarding the future of redevelopment agencies (RDAs) in California. California's RDAs have been critically important for urban renewal and the development of affordable housing. However, in 2012, the RDAs were shuttered in an attempt to close the State's budget shortfall. This panel will discuss where communities can look for urban renewal and affordable housing funds and opportunities in the future and how attorneys can help with these developments. The panel will be moderated by Amy Forbes of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and will include Lance Bocarsly of Bocarsly Emden Cowan Esmail & Arndt and Holly Benson, VP of Housing Development at Abode Communities, who will share details of one of Abode's projects, which has been affected by changes in California law since 2011.
