Joel Fried, President and Director - PRIMECAP Management Co.
Joel P. Fried joined PRIMECAP Management Company in 1986, where he is currently president and director. He also serves as co-chief executive officer and trustee of the PRIMECAP Odyssey Funds. In 2003, Fried, along with two of his colleagues, was awarded the Domestic Equity Fund Manager of the Year Award by Morningstar. Fried and two of his colleagues also were named by Morningstar as runner-up to its Fund Manager of the Year Award in 2000, 1999 and 1997.
Fried is a portfolio manager of the Vanguard Capital Opportunity Fund, which in 2003 was awarded Lipper's Performance Achievement Award as the #1 performing MultiCap Core Fund for the prior five-year period. Fried also serves as a portfolio manager of the Vanguard PRIMECAP Fund, which in 2000 was named by Lipper as the #1 performing MultiCap Core Fund for the prior 10- and 15-year periods.
Fried received his bachelor of science degree in economic systems/science from UCLA, and his MBA degree from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
In 2002, he established Research Affiliates as a research-intensive asset management firm that focuses on innovative products. The firm explores novel approaches to active asset allocation, optimal portfolio construction, more efficient forms of indexation and other quantitative strategies. Research Affiliates delivers investment solutions globally in partnership with leading financial institutions. Rob has been a frequent contributor to leading financial journals and books. He has published more than 100 articles in journals such as the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Harvard Business Review, and the Financial Analysts Journal, where he also served as editor in chief from 2002 through 2006. In recognition of his achievements as a financial writer, Rob has received six Graham and Dodd Scrolls, awarded annually by CFA Institute for best articles of the year. He also has received two Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs-Levy awards from the Journal of Portfolio Management.
