Farhad Rostamian

Entrepreneurship and New Product Development - 4 units

FARHAD ROSTAMIAN is a seasoned product and business executive successful in scaling technology products from early stage to global leadership position. Currently he is a lecturer at UCLA Anderson School of Management, teaching courses in Entrepreneurship and New Product Development. Guided by his industry experience, he incorporates many relevant and real world examples of products and companies in his teaching. He has a deep understanding of technology products for the consumer market, and has successfully launched more than 25 such products generating $500 million in annual revenue.

While at Photobit /Micron, Farhad was responsible for all the marketing functions and the product line for smart phone cameras, garnering rapid growth and achieving 35% market share. In that role, he established long-term and highly profitable business across several product lines with industry giants such as Samsung, Nokia, Motorola and Apple. At Interlink Electronics, where he held sensor division P&L responsibility, he revamped the work process and established a new business strategy. Farhad directed and positioned the division to offer customized sensors to the consumer electronics and medical device industries capturing customers such as Samsung, LG, Microsoft and Minimed. More recently, Farhad lived and worked in China modernizing and managing the operations of a Chinese consumer products company.

His leadership skills span from working with executive teams on business planning and strategy to building global teams and application centers for rapid customer acquisition and design-wins. He elicits his multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary competencies in order to build consensus and momentum within cross-functional teams. He invigorates collaboration across the organization and around a shared vision, while driving both top and bottom lines.

Farhad has substantial international business and operations experience across Asia, Europe and the Americas. He has written industry white papers, and is a recognized thought leader on sensors and small cameras. He has represented several companies in conferences and been a speaker on various panels. He holds an MBA and advanced degrees in engineering from UCLA, and five patents. His interests include worldwide travel (40+ countries), scuba diving (250 dives), and gourmet cooking.

Kate Pletcher

Communication and Persuasion for Future Leaders in Technology - 4 units

KATE PLETCHER is the Founder and CEO of Treehouse Partners. Prior to launching the firm, Kate owned and ran a successful franchised staffing firm in Los Angeles, served as Director of Global Brand Licensing for Skechers (sourcing and managing licensing programs on behalf of the $2 billion brand around the world), and worked as Director of Business Development for bsp (a brand extension consultancy). She got her start in sales & business development early in her career, as a radio advertising sales person in Western New York and later as a regional representative for Simmons Bedding Company.

Kate received her BA in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin and her MBA from UCLA Anderson. She serves on the Advisory Board of SPARK, provides sales workshops and classes for a number of individuals and institutions, and is an active member of a number of Los Angeles community organizations. She lives in Venice, CA with her husband Erik, son Cain, and dog Kirby.

Richard Patlan

Introduction to Data Management and Analytics, Big and Small Data - 4 units

RICHARD PATLAN has worked in the IT industry for the past 25 years. Since 2000, Richard has worked for the Capital Programs department at UCLA as a DBA and Programmer. He is responsible for designing, developing, testing and deploying small and large back-end Relational Database Management System. He maintains four production SQL servers which include managing security for internal and external uses and backup and restore procedures. Richard also manages and coordinates the design and development of several production websites. He is currently in process of converting them to ASP.Net MVC in C#. He is also in charge of managing the department SharePoint site. This includes creating new document libraries when necessary, updating content and setting up security for both internal and external users.

Since 2005, Richard has been lead instructor of several courses at UCLA Extension. He teaches an Introduction to Structured Query Language course, and Advanced Structure Query Language course and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course.

He has also has served as a Consultant to many small and large business. He has served as a SQL trainer to staff providing instruction on SQL programing and as a database designer assisting in the development and programming of relational database management systems.

Richard Patlan holds B.A from California State University of Fresno and a Masters from the University of California at Los Angeles.
