Letter from the Dean

Dean Judy Olian

Welcome to a very special edition of Assets.

As we advance toward UCLA’s centennial in 2019, the university and all our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends have many reasons for pride in the groundbreaking achievements since our founding. The $4.2 billion Centennial Campaign for UCLA, the largest fundraising effort ever undertaken by a public university, is unabashedly ambitious. It paves the way for the continuing accomplishments of the university and our graduates for the next century.

Our Place

Our history has been shaped by the special character of our city. With 18 million people from 140 countries, Los Angeles is one of the most diverse cities on the planet and a gateway to the world. Los Angeles is home to Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized enterprises, small businesses and a slew of startups.

With such business vibrancy surrounding us, it is only fitting that Los Angeles is the home of a great school of management — a collection of very smart people, unafraid to experiment with new ideas and approaches, people who drive change. We champion diverse beliefs and experiences as a source of strength and are disposed toward shared solutions.

Our Character

The essential character of UCLA Anderson is borrowed from our namesakes, John and Marion Anderson. The spirit and ethos of the Andersons infuse every aspect of learning and community at UCLA Anderson. Beyond the buildings, courtyards and endowed chairs that bear their names, the Andersons’ generosity and commitment to the school have prepared thousands of alumni to build professional and personal successes.

We have been blessed with a legacy of teachers who have transformed lives, and alumni who have been remarkably influential in business and communities. They possess the qualities essential to the Anderson character, qualities that connect our past to the present and future.

At UCLA Anderson, we share success, think fearlessly and drive change. There’s a warmth and energy at Anderson that is palpable because of these qualities. They are the essence of who we are and the difference we strive to make in the world. Anderson is home to The Next, in the city of The Next — where individuals feel a sense of freedom to dream big and test ideas until they become realities. It is an environment that encourages all to thrive, that questions without undermining, that excels without compromise.

Our Future

As we experience galloping change, we admit that we cannot know exactly what’s Next. What we do know is we must continue to be the springboard for exceptionally talented students as they think fearlessly and drive change; we must lead management thinking through the advances of our world-class scholars and teachers; and we must continue to lift organizations and communities by sharing sophisticated management thinking and practice through our faculty and alumni.

Those aspirations fuel Anderson’s Campaign for The Next, with a goal of $175 million and another $80 million for improvement of facilities. What’s Next? That depends on us, and on you. The Centennial Campaign comes at a special moment for UCLA Anderson — as we forgo state funding and transition to financial self-sufficiency for all of our masters programs. This momentous transition brings advantages of nimbleness and financial self-reliance, while advancing our legacy of student excellence, faculty distinctions and our public mission. It also increases our reliance on your philanthropic support.

The priorities for our campaign include vital support for: student financial aid; world-class researchers; curricula and research centers in emerging fields; learning experiences that develop ethical leaders for lives of significance; global immersion programs; and facilities that foster preparation for 21st-century organizations.

This Centennial Campaign celebrates the essential character of UCLA Anderson. Please join us as we seize this moment to achieve the goals of UCLA Anderson’s Campaign for The Next.
