UCLA Anderson alumni behind-the-scenes tour of the US Navy SEALS's training program

Sixty UCLA Anderson alumni had the privilege of a behind-the-scenes tour of the US Navy SEAL's training program on June 6, 2012. Lt Commander Gary Ryals '08 and Captain Chris Lindsay '90 allowed these lucky alumni an opportunity to understand the process of becoming a new member of the exclusive SEAL teams, through the selection course known as Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training or BUDS. After a presentation of the various stages of training, and the mentoring that takes place, the group was led out to the beach to see the training in action. Captain Lindsay joined the group, and partnered with Lt. Commander Ryals as they presented the leadership lessons and philosophy within the SEALs program. Not surprisingly, many of these lessons parallel what is learned at UCLA Anderson. Specifically, the importance of a setting and communicating the mission or goal, the significance of a training process, the importance of establishing trust across a unit, the need to invest in your greatest asset- your team, and the power and relevance of feedback. The SEALs have found that some of the key characteristics that make a successful candidate include self-introspection and the ability to accept criticism. The tour concluded with a display of weaponry and communication tools.
