Stuart W Sinclair graduated from UCLA Anderson in 1984 after working as an economist for six years, with the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry and the United Nations in Geneva and Vienna. He had also been a lecturer in economics at The University of Reading, during which time he wrote two books on urbanization and developing country patterns of industrialization.

From 1984 until 1994 he lived in Boston and worked as a management consultant, latterly with Mercer Management Consulting, which merged into Oliver Wyman. His clients included Chemical Bank, Signet Bank and Capital One, Citibank, PetroCanada, Mazda, Toyota, AT&T, NYNEX and others in banking and manufacturing. In 1994 he returned with his family to Edinburgh, his home town, to begin work at The Royal Bank of Scotland, where he was, successively, Director of UK Retail Banking and CEO, Tesco Bank and Director, Virgin Direct (the latter two being RBS joint ventures.)   In 1999 he joined GE Capital as CEO of the UK consumer businesses, which ultimately grew to have 11 sites, around 4,300 staff and $500 million net income; he was then promoted to GE Corporate Officer and became CEO of GE Capital China, living in Shanghai from 2004 to 2006.  In 2006 he left GE to become President of Aspen Re, a Bermuda-domiciled reinsurer. After 2008 he became a non-executive director, and in that capacity he is or has been a director of Liverpool Victoria, Provident Financial, Pru-Health, Platinum Bank (in Kiev), Universalne Insurance (Kiev), Swinton Insurance, and a Council member of The Royal Institiute of International Affairs. In the last three years he has also been working on starting a new British retail bank. He lives in London and Edinburgh.
