Professor Sanjog Misra Tom Austin ('93)
VP, Governance, Risk and Controls, Cisco Systems, Inc.

Tom Austin joined Cisco Systems in June 2013 and oversees the company's Governance, Risk and Controls organization that partners with the internal business units across the following two areas: (1) Operational and IT Audit functions that look to optimize the processes and controls throughout the company, and (2) Enterprise Risk Management group that works with operations to address areas of strategic and business risk, as well as risk mitigation planning.

Previously, Mr. Austin worked at Applied Materials for 16 years, where he was most recently the Vice President and Segment CFO for the Display and Solar Business Segments. He also headed up Global Internal Audit at Applied Materials for 5 years, transforming the department by increasing employee development, leveraging operational process experience, and focusing on key strategic risks. Prior to Applied Materials, Mr. Austin spent 4 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in business assurance, and 3 years at Merrill Lynch & Co. in investment banking.

He is a licensed CPA and CIA, with an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Business in Finance and Accounting, and a Master of Science in Engineering-Economic Systems and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, both from Stanford University.

Professor Sanjog Misra Derek Idemoto ('99)
VP, Corporate Development, Cisco Systems, Inc.

Derek Idemoto is vice president of corporate development at Cisco Systems, and is currently responsible for driving Cisco’s strategy, acquisitions and investments across its video and connected home, collaboration, security and digital media businesses. Derek is also responsible for Cisco’s corporate development activities in India, Japan, Korea, ASEAN and ANZ.

Derek previously led Cisco’s corporate development teams responsible for the company’s service provider networking, mobility and consumer businesses. Prior to joining Cisco, Derek was managing director of venture investment for ITOCHU Technology, the Silicon Valley-based technology venture capital investment and business development arm of ITOCHU Corporation. Derek focused on information technology investments, including communications, software and services, digital media and the Internet.

Before ITOCHU, Derek was vice president of corporate development at Overture Services, the pioneer of commercial search services on the Internet, acquired by Yahoo! in 2003. Prior to Overture, Derek was a venture associate at Kline Hawkes & Co., a Los Angeles private equity firm, where he focused on technology-enabled services investments. Previously, Derek was an investment banker with Cowen, where he focused on equity capital raising within the IT industry. He began his professional career with the M&A team of BancAmerica Securities.

Derek received a BS in finance and marketing from U.C. Berkeley an MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA where he was a venture fellow.

Sanjay Sood's research and teaching expertise lies in the area of brand equity and consumer decision making. Using psychological principles, Sanjay examines how firms can best build, manage, and leverage strong brand names. This includes investigating what brand names mean to consumers, how to manage brand portfolios, how to use brand naming strategies to launch new products, and how to protect brand names from becoming diluted over time and across geographical boundaries.
