He holds faculty appointments in psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and in the department of integrative biology and physiology in the College of Letters and Science. His academic specialization, circadian biology, deals with the functioning of 24-hour rhythms in higher organisms. Chancellor Block is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The inventor of a number of devices, he holds a patent for a non-contact respiratory monitor for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
