Coupons/Promotions/Rebates are one of the oldest tools used by marketers. Until recently, most of these tools have been blunt-edged, distributed by mass means to large groups of potential customers. Once individual data is available, then the possibility exists of making customized price promotions or discounts. In principle, customized promotions are very appealing on efficiency and effectiveness grounds. The problem is how to make the best use of data and use the data in a way customizes the promotion not only to the preferences of the customer but also the amount of information available on that particular customer. I will review advances in research that now make customized promotions feasible.
