This year's recipient, Grady M. Smith (MBA '01), is a Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Dimensional Fund Advisors. Dimensional has more than 30 years of experience managing equity and fixed income investments for both institutional and individual investors, with over $200 billion in global assets under management. Since joining the firm in 2001, Smith has had broad based portfolio responsibilities, including managing US domestic mutual funds and trusts across multiple asset classes, global equity separate accounts, tax-managed portfolios, and the firm's global equity and global allocation funds of funds. He is currently a member of the firm's Investment Strategies group, where he has general oversight responsibilities for a broad array of Dimensional's global equity and fixed income strategies, with a particular focus on US equity. His role also includes communicating with clients and others as to how Dimensional's portfolios are designed, implemented and operated, and the principles and academic research on which the firm is founded.
Prior to joining Dimensional, Smith enjoyed a career as a management consultant, most recently with Mercer. As a Principal in their Los Angeles office, he was a lead consultant in providing advice to some of the firm's largest accounts, including healthcare underwriting, risk evaluation, negotiations, planning, due diligence, and M&A support. His industry experience included manufacturing, aerospace, telecom, entertainment and healthcare, among others. Before joining Mercer, he held a similar role with KPMG, where he also served as a national consulting skills instructor, training new consulting staff from throughout the US on consulting concepts, project management, presentation skills and effective teamwork.
During his time at Anderson, Smith was involved in ongoing efforts to integrate interactions between the full-time, FEMBA and EMBA programs, in a time that saw a significant expansion of the FEMBA student population. After his graduation in 2001, he served as CFO for the UCLA Anderson Alumni Network's Board of Directors, later serving as President of the Board. Under Smith's leadership, the Board grew significantly in size, and the organization re-branded itself as the UCLA Anderson Alumni Network, while also implementing a new strategic plan integrated with the UCLA Anderson strategic planning process. As a Past President, he continues to make time to be involved with the UCLA Anderson community, including on-campus speaking engagements, interacting with new and prospective students, serving on the organizing committee for the school's annual golf tournament, and generally supporting the needs of the Alumni Network as a whole.
Smith earned a BA in Economics from Stanford University in 1978, an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 2001 (Harold M. Williams Fellow), and is a CFA Charterholder.
