Si-Wei Cheng, MBA 1983

Si-Wei ChengMr. Cheng Si-wei, a native of Xiangxiang, Hunan Province, Cheng was born in June 1935; and obtained MBA from UCLA Anderson.

Prof. Cheng is a famous Chinese scholar in economic, financial and managerial fields as well as in chemical industry. He devoted himself in the reform and opening up of China for 30 years. He used the approach of complexity science to study the economic reforms in China and put forward many valuable and influencing proposals to the top leaders of China, and implemented his thoughts in his work as the Vice Chairman, Standing Committee of National People's Congress of China and the Chairman, Central Committee of China National Democratic Construction Association. He initiated the school of fictitious economy and has a deep influence in China's economic and financial circle. He also promoted the venture capital business in China and build up high reputation in this field. He is also very active in international academic community and was invited to give keynote speeches in many countries and international forums.

Prof. Cheng has been working in the fields of chemical industry for 41 years. In the first 20 years of his career life, he was engaged in scientific research and development of inorganic chemicals, including borax, boric acid, chromium compounds, etc. He is the pioneer and academic leader in China's borax industry.

Prof. Cheng was engaged in the R&D management of chemical industry for over 20 yeas. Firstly as a principal engineer managing R&D in inorganic chemical industry, he lead the development of chromium compounds and published a book titled "Technology of Chromium Compounds". He also made many contributions in advising the R&D of sodium chlorite, hydrogen peroxide, titanium dioxide, etc. Then as a chief engineer managing R&D in chemical industry, he organized and advised a series of R&D programs in fertilizer, pesticides, etc. and published many papers regarding R&D management, reform of R&D system, science and technology policy, etc.

Beginning from 1980s, he has been actively engaged in the studies of soft science and management science. The research project named "System Study in Developing China's Phosphate Resources" leading by him won the second class national prize of science and technology progress and first class of science and technology progress prize of the Ministry of Chemical Industry. Another research project named "Strategy of Application of polymers in Automobile Industry" advising by him won the third class national prize of science and technology progress and second class of science and technology progress prize of the Ministry of Chemical Industry.

Prof. Cheng has been striving to develop theory and methodology in soft science studies. He put forward the POSMEP procedure in soft science study, developed the modeling and solution techniques in large scale goal programming, established models for planning China's phosphate resources development, and the goal programming models for developing China's chemical industry.

As the director general of the Dept. of Management Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China, he is actively promoting the development of management sciences in China, and has formulated the discipline structure and development strategy of China's management sciences.

Prof. Cheng is striving to promote the integration of system engineering with chemical engineering, especially the integration of technical optimization with economic and environmental optimization.
