Promotes Children's Literacy in Rural Guatemala
Entrepreneurship isn't always about financial profit; it can also be used for social gain. For proof, there is Smith's work with Reading Village, a not-for-profit organization she founded that promotes children's literacy in rural Guatemala. Working in one of the poorest and least literate nations in the Western Hemisphere, Smith has drawn on her UCLA Anderson experience to create a thriving international non-governmental organization from the ground up. Her professional approach to the work has enabled Reading Village to enlist the support of an airline CEO, film actress, and founder of one of the world's most successful retail chains to the cause of cultivating the young Mayan leaders of the future.
